Friday May 4th at 2 PM at Sachs Branch-St.Louis County Library
“NGA’s vision is “Know the Earth… Show the way…Understand the World” NGA people collect information to describe the Earth and show what’s happening all over the world. When they put all of the information together, it’s called GEOINT (geospatial intelligence).
GEOINT helps us answer these kinds of important questions:

  • How can we rescue a soldier?
  • Which way is the best way to go?
  • If we get lost, which routes will lead us home?
  • How can we protect our country from our enemies?
  • Can we predict what will be damaged in a flood?
  • Where is it safe to sail a ship?
  • Where is it dangerous to fly a plane?

People who use NGA’s GEOINT include pilots, drivers, and ship navigators. NGA makes GEOINT for our nation’s military services and many types of government work. NGA provides GEOINT to government officials who make important decisions, including the president of the United States.” (from the NGA website)  This presentation may include some handouts.  Contact Susan Kumbera, kumudini@charter.net for details and RSVP.

Used Curriculum Sale
Thursday, June 28th (back-up date Friday, June 29th)
Time: 9 am – 2 pm (set-up time starts at 7:30)
Location: First Baptist Church of Bethalto, 201 S. Moreland Road, Bethalto, IL 62010
Cost to participate: None
I know this is late in the year, but this gives everyone a chance to finish using this years books and get them sorted and priced. We will be using the gym in the church, so we will be cool and not have to worry about rain. The back-up date is in case someone from the church needs to use it (like for a funeral). There is a large playground outside for the kiddos and, if we don’t fill up the gym, they can use the basketball hoop inside also.
You can bring your children with you, but at this time there are no babysitters. I am going to ask my 15 year old about this and if there are any other teens who would help with watching the kiddos that would be great.
So now I need to know who is participating?? Tables will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. The tables are either 6″ long or rounds, the church has both. Number of tables given will depend on the number of people who respond, I want to fit in everyone possible, so you may need to think about building your table “UP” (I am using some shelves my husband built me).
All responses need to be sent directly to my email, which is purescentsations@yahoo.com.
Thank you for your interest!
Blessings,
Roberta Williams

I try to include as many events or classes I know of in the Greater St. Louis area that would be of special interest to homeschoolers. Some of these events come from a distinctively “Christian” perspective, while others are purely “secular” in nature. If you see things that you would not be particularly interested in, just ignore them and look for the things that do appeal to you.

Faust Fine Arts and Craft Festival
The Faust Fine Arts and Craft Festival began over thirty years ago and was known as the Tilles Art and Craft Festival. When Highway 40 underwent repairs the show was moved to Faust Park and continues there to this day. The show began as a traditional arts and craft show and has expanded to include the historic homes and a children’s area with hands on projects. Come and enjoy the juried Faust Fine Arts and Folk Festival on May 19 & 20, from 10 am to 5 pm in beautiful Faust Park located at 15185 Olive Street.
You will see a variety of mediums displayed including oil and acrylic painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry, prints, water color, and folk art to name a few. Walk among the historical homes, shop, listen to the soft music, talk to the fine artists and crafters from the surrounding states and let the children try the fun projects available to them. Take a break and sample the various concessions while you sit and relax in this peaceful and historical environment. Admission to the show is $3 per adult and $1 for children 8 and younger. Zebra Camp–A Social Skills Summer Camp
Zebra Camp is a highly structured, therapeutic camp to teach and reinforce your child’s social skills.  The camp is restricted to no more than 5 children and 2 adults.  The camp is taught by Jan Butler, SLP CCC.  Jan Butler is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Autism Consultant with almost 25 years of experience!  Please check out our website to learn more about Mrs. Butler at www.victoryspeechtherapy.com   Each camp will also have a trained assistant to help the children.
Zebra Camp is broken down into groups based on age and ability level.  There is an Elementary, Jr. High, and High School camp. The concept is the same in all camps; however the difficulty level and activities are different.  If you are unsure about which camp your child should attend, please give us a call!  In addition, if your child is new here, I will conduct a free social skills screening to help determine your child’s needs and goals for camp.
Each camp will teach: body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, conversational skills, turn taking, responding to peers, humor, conflict resolution, figurative language, monitor verbal comments, identify and self monitor emotions, heightened awareness of others, and express ideas and opinions appropriately. Each camp is custom tailored to your child and their needs.  Goals that need more attention are addressed more intensely, the skills they can do well are just touched on.  Updates will be given daily to communicate with you what your child has been taught that day.  A final report will be written after camp summarizing what your child was taught and the progress they made throughout the week.
Zebra Camp runs from Monday-Friday, 9 am-3 pm.  Your child will need to bring a lunch.  A refrigerator, microwave, and water will be available.  Zebra Camp early registration fee is $600.  After April 20, 2012, the fee for camp is $700.  A $100 deposit is required with the application.  A full refund can be made up until May 1, 2012.  After May 1, 2012, the deposit will not be refunded.  Please feel free to call if you have any additional questions.  Thank you for your interest in Zebra Camp!

(available on Amazon)  Students will also  have the opportunity to read aloud some of the great characters from the classic works gaining self confidence as they work on voice, diction and oral interpretation.  (An in depth study of the greatest of all the Greek playwrights, Sophocles, and his Three Theban Plays will be offered in the Fall 2012 semester. ) BOOK WILL BE NEEDED.
Elizabethan Poets:  Shakespeare’s Sonnets -  1:15 – 2:30pm  (ages 12+)  Students will be introduced to the beautiful poetry of Shakespeare through his sonnets.  We will read aloud several sonnets each week and discuss themes. language, symbolism and characterizations.  We will be using the No Fear Shakespeare Series book titled  SONNETS (in stock at Barnes and Noble) which has the original language and the modern translation of each and every one so we will never have to guess what the Bard was trying to say!  Since each sonnet is self contained and short it will be a fun and easy way to get introduced to Shakespeare!  At the last class students will even have the chance to try their hand at writing their own sonnet for fun! BOOK WILL BE NEEDED.
NOTE:  The Classical Literature Series, in which students will study a variety of poets and playwrights, will  be offered in the 2012-13 School year with classes on Fridays beginning 9/7/2012.

Students are welcome to take one or more classes. I have tried to design the day with lots of variety to hopefully encourage students to take advantage of several classes. I also wanted to keep classes short enough to maintain interest and still develop skills!   I have lots of outside space and students may bring a lunch and eat outside between classes.
Please email me at heathersartin@yahoo.com with any questions or to register your students.

If you know of an event, class, happening, or link you would like to see added, please contact me at zana8796 [at] yahoo [dot] com  Comments are not available, but sharing is.
