HELLO!!!

Welcome to the new home of the St. Louis Homeschool Events List! Please feel free to share this website with other homeschoolers! To have future posts sent to your inbox, it just takes an email address (NO password necessary). You will find the sign up box in the right column at the website. Below you will find still relevant repeat listings from the 5/16/11 mini post (so they will be searchable at the new site). I will be adding more over the next several days, so there will be a few extra posts for a bit.  After the initial repeats (to allow for searching), only new additions will be posted and I will then continue to post no more than twice a week. Yea! No more 60 page emails, you don’t have time to read and a functioning search engine! Remember to visit the “Ongoing Offerings” (at the website). ALGEBRA I CLASS

Bob Johnson, a former high school math teacher, is offering an Algebra I class in West County starting in the fall.  He writes: About me:  I received a Missouri teacher’s certificate for secondary mathematics and taught high school math in public and private schools for 6 years.  I also worked for two years as a tutor and test prep instructor before starting my own tutoring/test prep business in 2009.  I help students with their math classes and their ACT and SAT prep.  On my website, http://www.BobJohnsonTutoring.com, you can learn more about me and read comments from students, parents, and other educators that I’ve worked with.  My wife, Jill, and I homeschool our children, who are 10 and 7.  Jill and I also lead the children’s ministry at our church.

About the curriculum:  From talking with homeschoolers, it sounds like most of you have questions about this.  I looked at Algebra 1 books by Saxon, ABeka, McDougall Littell, Prentice Hall, Scott Foresman, and Glencoe/McGraw Hill.  I’ve settled on the 2004 edition of the Prentice Hall Algebra 1 book, which you can buy used on Amazon.com for about $30 to $45.  (If you buy, be sure to get the 2004 edition—it is different and better than the newer editions that are now out.)  I won’t get into the reasons why I rejected the others (feel free to ask, though), but here are some of the reasons I selected the 2004 Prentice Hall book:

>The first couple of chapters set a very solid foundation for the rest of this course and for higher level math courses.  Important terms and concepts are well-defined and presented in a logical order.  This is crucial.

> There are plenty of examples worked out with clear step-by-step instructions.  There are plenty of relevant, high quality graphics.  In short, it is user-friendly.

> There are plenty of exercises available in each section for as much practice as each student needs.  There are also plenty of review exercises available.

> The content, terminology, and problem-solving approaches are well-suited for the ACT and the SAT, as well as for higher level math classes.

> There are some really neat online aides made for this book, such as extra practice quizzes and tests, and video tutorials.  These online resources are FREE, and can be found at http://www.phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?area=view&wcprefix=aek&wcsuffix=0099.

About the class:  We will meet twice a week (possibly Tuesdays and Fridays) for 90 minutes each day, with a small break halfway through the 90 minutes.  I’m not sure how many students will eventually sign up, but I’ll limit the class to no more than 15 students, so that no one gets “lost in the crowd.”  This will be a

32 week class (16 weeks each semester), and the cost will be $600 for the year per student.  I will require the students to take notes, I’ll assign homework after almost every class, and we will have tests and quizzes.  I’ll be responsible for teaching all of the content, but as much as possible, I would encourage you to be involved in observing your child complete their homework assignments, so that you can stay “in the loop” regarding what they are learning.  Generally speaking, I’ll start each class by taking questions about the previous class’ homework assignment.  Then, for new topics, I’ll explain and demonstrate each topic, and I’ll give the students an opportunity to practice on their own.  I like to be very interactive, so I’ll ask a lot of questions as I teach, to make sure that the students are “getting it” each step of the way, and I encourage the students to ask plenty of questions themselves.  I will vary my approaches and methods to account for the variety of learning styles, and I will deviate from my daily “agenda” whenever it becomes apparent that the students need more or less time on a topic than I had previously predicted.  I have requested a room at a facility in Ballwin/Ellisville area and am waiting confirmation for Tues and Fri. for the hours of 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

Grades:  I will prepare and grade the tests and quizzes, and give you the results, and let you decide what to do with that information.  Even though I will answer questions about the homework, I do not plan on doing a “homework check” for a grade.  (This will save valuable classroom time.)   Instead, I would like the parents to do the homework check.  You would be checking for completion, not necessarily for accuracy.  I’ll let each parent decide how to weigh the test/quiz results with homework completion, attendance, etc., so the parent will be responsible for the quarter/semester grades that go on the student’s transcript.

Readiness:  Generally speaking, students can take this Algebra 1 class if they have satisfactorily completed a solid middle-school pre-algebra course.  I plan on making up my own assessment soon to give to each prospective student.  This would not really be an “entrance exam,” but rather, a tool to help me get a general idea of the strengths, weaknesses, and knowledge base of each student. This will help me structure the class more specifically to the needs of the participants.

DaySpring School of the Arts

I know that many of you are familiar with DaySpring.  Some of you have attended our performances, participated in either our Musical Theatre Program or maybe taken Dance or Art with us.

We are acquainted with several of you from our Enrichment classes specifically for homeschoolers.  However, many of you are surprised to find out that we offer a special educational option known as a University Model School, known to some of you as the Academy at DaySpring, or the Core Program.

Imagine being able to get the benefits of an excellent Christian school and the parental involvement of homeschooling all in one educational option-the best of both worlds as the saying goes.   If you know someone who has considered homeschooling, but is apprehensive about their ability to do it, this could be the answer for them.  DaySpring chooses the curriculum, does all the scheduling and planning taking all those pressures off the parents.  Students then spend two days a week in the classroom with a teacher and peers and three days at home doing school with their parents.  This option gives parents the opportunity to be directly involved in their child’s education, while utilizing the expertise and support of an experienced educator.

We at DaySpring want to help make home school education a positive experience for both students and parents.  Our teachers are not only caring compassionate Christians, but they are experts in their area of education.  We are here to create an environment where students are free to love learning, challenged to do their best, and given space to grow.

PIZZA HUT BOOK IT PROGRAM

About BOOK IT!

BOOK IT! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza. BOOK IT! is simple for the teacher to use, flexible because goals match reading ability, and fun because achieving a goal is a great reason to celebrate. BOOK IT! was created in 1985 and currently reaches over 10 million students annually.

Simple

BOOK IT! runs every school year from October through March. The teacher sets a reading goal for each child in the class. A tracking chart and reproducibles are included to make it that much easier. As soon as a child meets the monthly reading goal, the teacher gives him or her a Reading Award Certificate.

Flexible

BOOK IT! goals are based on reading ability. Number of books, number of pages, or number of minutes – they all work. BOOK IT! can also be used with the reading curriculum or as support for comprehension or intervention programs. For children not reading independently, the goal can be set where a parent or others read to the child.

Fun

Summer Session 2011 English Country Dancing

All are welcome!  Partners not required!

All dances will be taught as we do them.  No prior experience necessary!

The English Country Dance quadrille is a precursor to American square dancing, and the genteel dancing you’ll see in the many Jane Austen or Charles Dickens films, set in the early 1800’s.

We will be using volunteer callers for these dances.

All proceeds go directly to the Robert Kee and Larry Hart families (we will have two separate boxes to receive donations)

Directions:  From I-70 or I-270 take 370 to Hwy 94.  Go north (east) on Hwy 94 about 4 miles (about 5 minutes) to Trinity Lutheran School.  It will be on the left, shortly after a curve to the left and then back to the right again.  Look for a red brick school building with flagpoles out front.

Rules for the building include basic courtesy and common sense.  We will have the gym, rest rooms, and entry foyer.  Non-marking/court shoes are required.  We recommend you bring a water bottle for each person in your family.  All children must be attended by a responsible person at all times.  If they don’t wish to participate, they will be able to play quietly on the floor in the entry or along the edges of the gym while we dance, but they must stay off the dance floor and they must have someone with them to keep them out of harm’s way or from getting into mischief.

Advance registration helps us plan, but is not required.  Walk-ins welcome.

Multi Purpose Building Usage Policy

1. Smoking or other forms of tobacco use are NOT permitted inside any of the buildings in the school complex.

2. Only clean gym/court shoes (no street shoes) are permitted on the gym floor during recreational activities.

3. Only authorized personnel are allowed in the equipment room.

4. When the kitchen is used, it will be left in a clean and sanitary condition suitable for the next use.  All tables and counter tops shall be wiped down with a damp rag and mild detergent.  All utensils, dishes, and other items shall be washed clean in soapy water and stored in their proper locations.

5. Speech and conduct must be appropriate for each activity and reflect Christian standards.

6. Animals are prohibited from the building unless specifically trained for assisting a disabled individual.

7. Individuals using the building and equipment are responsible for losses or damages.  It is the responsibility of each family to insure that all facilities are returned to the condition they were in prior to the activity.

8. At least one adult must be present at all times for every five minors.  Children will not be allowed to enter the building until adult supervision arrives.

9. Trinity Lutheran Church and School is not responsible for accident or injury.  All users are expected to use equipment properly and safely.  Examples of prohibited activities are hanging from basketball rims or nets, kicking or throwing balls, climbing on stacked mats, risers, chairs or tables, or using equipment in a manner inconsistent with its intended use or in a way that would be deemed unsafe.

10. The group is responsible for leaving the used rooms neat.  Specifically, all trash will be collected and deposited in the proper waste receptacles throughout the building.  If a custodian must be hired to clean up after the group, an extra fee will be charged.  If the premises are damaged, an extra fee will be charged and the security deposit forfeited.

11. Horseplay or loitering is not allowed.  Adults are responsible for the conduct of the minors under their supervision.  No one is permitted in any room other than the one they are scheduled for.

12. The Multi Purpose Building may remain closed during inclement or severe weather.  Closing the facility due to weather will be announced by way of e-mail and/or phone call to all families registered.  Every effort will be made to reschedule the activity at a later date.

Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center

This local resource nurses lost baby birds and injured adult songbirds. She mentioned to me that the center is smack dab in the middle of its baby bird season, and is more overwhelmed than usual. They could really use some more volunteers. A new volunteer probably wouldn’t begin the volunteer experience feeding baby songbirds, but could help with other important tasks and will probably quickly end up helping with injured adults.

Older teens can volunteer, but even younger teens can participate alongside of a parent volunteer (so, those under 16 may do some volunteer work, but the parent is the official volunteer).
