Carondelet Historical Society
6303 Michigan, St. Louis, MO 63111.
This location is the home of Susan Blow’s first successful kindergarten, where she proved, following examples set by Pestalozzi and Froebel, that very young children have many capabilities and interests. These interests, when developed and encouraged, lead to much higher scores and adaptability even into adulthood. The famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was taught through her methods, as well as many other architects, artists and mathematicians. When Susan Blow taught women to be kindergarten teachers here, they write of the spiritual awakening her words caused within them.
Many of her materials and methods are still housed here; from building blocks to songs to journals, available for viewing.
I and the Society would like to reach out to the home schooling community and let you in on some of our treasures. St. Louis has a fascinating history that offers so much in the way of knowledge and expertise. From the French-Indian Wars to bridge building, St. Louis has always been on the cusp of progress. Many honorable people invested themselves in growing a strong and fair community.
Currently, we are contemplating programs that may be of interest to homeschoolers. We house in excess of 30,000 items including genealogical records, libraries and memorabilia, our ‘Wall of Honor” presently displaying more than 1100 photos of veterans from surrounding communities. The Civil War, the World Wars, Architecture, area business studies, antique and vintage clothing patterning and construction and photography are just a few of the possibilities.
Your input on areas of interest to you and your family would be much appreciated. Write to to speak your mind.
Our annual Open House will be June 10, 2012 from 1-3PM, featuring fashion wear of days gone by.
As a non-profit organization, there is always opportunity to become a member and/or volunteer. Currently, the CHS is open for walk-in visitors on Wednesdays, 9:30 A.M. until 2 P.M. and on Saturdays, 100:30 A.M until 2 P. M.
Accommodations are available for special events and group tours; 314-481-6303.
Adults admission $2, Children under 12, $1.
If you would like to comment, advise, or find further information, please feel free to contact me.

The posted events are open to all homeschoolers in the St. Louis, MO, area (including St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, and Jefferson County in MO, and Madison County, Monroe County, and St. Clair County in IL, and surrounding regions). Those marked with an asterisk (*) do not take place within the target area for this list, but are open to all homeschoolers who live in the target area. NOTE: Inclusion in this list does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the blog owner. I try to include as many events or classes I know of in the Greater St. Louis area that would be of special interest to homeschoolers. Some of these events come from a distinctively “Christian” perspective, while others are purely “secular” in nature. If you see things that you would not be particularly interested in, just ignore them and look for the things that do appeal to you.
