Home Educators Autism Initiative
Group for Parents & Children
This program combines an autism parent support group and children’s social skills groups for families who homeschool. Children in these groups do not have to be on the autistic spectrum.
The program is funded through Autism Speaks and is free of charge.
The parent group, which meets on the last Monday of the month, starting in September, provides education about autism (including symptoms, diagnosis, behaviors, and treatment), resources available in the community, ideas for parenting, and a forum in which parents can offer knowledge and support to each other. Parents whose children are not in the social skills groups are eligible to attend.
The weekly children’s social skills groups, for ages 6-10 and 11-15, provide a setting for learning and practicing fundamental social skills, including: conversation skills, emotional regulation, understanding others, respect, and building confidence. Children can establish meaningful, ongoing friendships through these groups. The groups utilize Super Skills, a social skills program that identifies each child’s strengths and weaknesses and sets up goals to address specific areas of need.
All groups meet Mondays from 3:00-4:00 at Agape’s West County location, 11600 Manchester Road, Suite 101 Des Peres, MO 63131. The 12-week groups begin August 31, 2015. Registration will re-open at the beginning of each semester. Children can join groups at any time if the group is not full. The parent support group meets monthly at the same time and location as the children’s groups.
This group is continuous and can be joined at anytime throughout the year if space is still available.
To register, call Carolyn Knarr at 314-556-1427.

The posted events are open to all homeschoolers in the St. Louis, MO, area (including St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Lincoln County, Franklin County, and Jefferson County in MO, and Madison County, Monroe County, and St. Clair County in IL, and surrounding regions).
NOTE: Inclusion in this list does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the blog owner. I try to include as many events or classes I know of in the Greater St. Louis area that would be of special interest to homeschoolers. Some of these events come from a distinctively “Christian” perspective, while others are purely “secular” in nature. If you see things that you would not be particularly interested in, just ignore them and look for the things that do appeal to you.
