September Cafe: The Cool Side of the Cosmos
Have you ever wondered how scientists study the cosmos without ever going into space? Find out how researchers are able to measure and study something that originates in another part of the universe from right here on Earth!  Join us and explore the astrophysics behind cosmic rays and learn why so many astrophysicists travel to Antarctica to conduct their experiments.  Dr. Martin Israel from the Department of Physics & The McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University will tell us about his research and his experiences studying cosmic rays.

Stossel in the Classroom
Our BRAND NEW 2017 DVD is Now Available! Follow this link to order our newest FREE DVD, the 2017 Edition! The DVD includes nine new video segments covering social studies, civics, economics, government, science, and psychology; both English and Spanish subtitles; and an accompanying Teacher Guide (also in English and Spanish) containing lesson plans, graphic organizers, activity suggestions, viewing guides, assessment, and vocabulary. Order yours today!
In addition to our new DVD, we’re rolling out a TON OF NEW CONTENT for the new school year! Here are some of the great new features for you and your students:
Note: Some of the new features are still being implemented and will be gaining functionality over the next few weeks
THE CLASSROOM EXTENSION: Your students will now be able to register on our site and connect with you and their fellow students. THE STUDENT CENTER will allow them to learn more about the topics discussed in our videos, and also features resources that will help them find the right college. THE TEACHER CENTER allows you to create groups for your registered students and assign videos for them to watch on their own time. Within the next few weeks, we’ll also be adding quizzes and worksheets that you can assign as homework.
BOTH SIDES OF THE ISSUES: We’ve heard your feedback requesting a more balanced approach, and now we’re delivering. Our new “Both Sides of the Issue” page will pair John’s videos with other videos representing the opposing sides, so that your students can learn about multiple perspectives. Our goal at Stossel in the Classroom has always been to promote critical thinking and discussion, and we hope this new approach will encourage that even more.
ON-SITE NOTIFICATIONS: We’re making it easier to stay updated! Notifications on our website will inform you about your students’ activity on our site, and also let you know when there are new streaming videos and DVDs available. Students who log-in to our site will also receive notifications about new videos, and be notified when you assign them on-site homework assignments. They can even connect to other students and get notifications about their activity.
VIDEO CONTEST: In addition to our annual Essay Contest, we’re very excited to announce that we’ll be doing a Video Contest this year! Instead of just watching John’s videos, your students can make their own and compete for great prizes. Stay tuned for details on both contests!
We’ve been working hard to make Stossel in the Classroom better than ever. Check out all the new features, and let us know what you think!

The posted events are open to all homeschoolers in the St. Louis, MO, area (including St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Lincoln County, Franklin County, and Jefferson County in MO, and Madison County, Monroe County, and St. Clair County in IL, and surrounding regions).
NOTE: Inclusion in this list does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the blog owner. I try to include as many events or classes I know of in the Greater St. Louis area that would be of special interest to homeschoolers. Some of these events come from a distinctively “Christian” perspective, while others are purely “secular” in nature. If you see things that you would not be particularly interested in, just ignore them and look for the things that do appeal to you.
