‘Freedom Fighters’ FTC Robotics team is looking for additional members. Ages 12-18
There are still openings for any Jr. High through High School aged kids interested in the First Technical Challenge.
This robotics team will focus on building and programming a robot made with actual metal parts. We are eagerly awaiting our robot parts kits to begin working on the 2016 Challenge, Velocity Vortex, for this year’s competitions. We are starting some online research in the meantime. This robot will be appx. 18″ cubed with various attachments to accomplish a variety of mission objectives. This team will likely participate in at least 2 competitions, maybe more, depending on funding and interest. We have set an initial practice time of Thursdays from 12:45-3pm at the Living Hope Church of Christ in Troy. We will need to add additional practice sessions per week as we get closer to the actual competitions.
We have received a grant to cover many of the initial costs involved with this larger robot and the team is working on securing sponsors from community businesses to cover the remainder balance. We would like to see the actual cost to families at a minimal. Please call me if you have any questions or would like to join us. This fantastic STEM opportunity is for both boys and girls and we do already have both on the team. The league also focuses on professional development, independent time management, communication, and planning and organizing skills. In addition, WE HAVE FUN!!!

The Jefferson County (Festus) and South County YMCAs are offering homeschool boys’ basketball this year, for grades 7-12.  The program runs from October – February.  There is one 2 hour practice per week (1-3 Tuesdays at Festus, 2-4 Wednesdays at SoCo).  There will be 1 or 2 games a month, and times on these will be determined.  As this is a new program, we are having to be flexible and can schedule when we know how many players we have, etc.  This is the 4th year for Jefferson County, and the first year we have expanded to South County.  The cost is $30/month ($23 for members), which includes the jersey, and is payable monthly.  For registration forms or more information you can contact Kevin Schwarz (SoCo) or Nick Davis or you can contact me, Paula Koranda at or call or text 636-208-9496.

JA Finance Park Homeschool Day
March 17, 2017; 9:30am-2:00pm
A.G. Edwards JA Finance Park is offering a visit day for our home schooling parent/teachers and students and we hope you’ll participate!
Teens rarely think about buying health insurance, child care, or evaluating investment choices. At A.G. Edwards JA Finance Park, they do!  JA Finance Park combines curriculum based learning with a day-long visit to a fully interactive, simulated economy. Students in 7th-12th grades (ages 13-19) are introduced to personal finance and career exploration. They receive family and income scenarios, identify lifestyle goals, visit 13 businesses to learn about 21 budget categories, create a budget, make purchasing decisions, and pay for their expenses. In the tablet-based program, students assume a persona of a provider for a family and must accommodate the needs of the family without overspending. Educators assist student learning by preparing students before the visit day and debriefing the experience after the visit day. Parent volunteers help guide the students through the JA Finance Park simulation.
Program Objectives
JA Finance Park will meet the needs of a diverse group of students by providing engaging, academically enriching experiential lessons. Following participation in the JA Finance Park experience, students will be able to:
-recognize the services of financial institutions
-understand the advantages of saving, investing, and using credit wisely
-examine the role of insurance in risk management
-examine the impact that credit scores and credit reporting have on personal finance
-discover the importance of spending money wisely
-recognize planning and budgeting as valuable tools
-apply classroom learning in the simulation by creating a family budget based on a hypothetical life situation
The JA Finance Park program curriculum is composed of 13 required teacher-taught lessons that are easy to use, with minimal preparation time. The curriculum culminates in a hands-on, tablet-based budgeting simulation that is implemented at our A.G. Edwards JA Finance Park, located inside the Dennis and Judy Jones Free Enterprise Center in Chesterfield, MO, with the assistance of volunteers who receive online training for their roles at JA Finance Park.  The simulation is approximately 4½ hours long.
I am providing this link to explain the way the JA Finance Park simulation works:  Visit Day Information
Once you have accessed the power-point, look to the left of the page and select “Arrival” on the drop down list.  The homeschool business assignment is sent out individually, so tell us if you want your student grouped with a specific student during the visit day.  Also, some parents (6-13) are asked to volunteer and assist with the JA Finance Park simulation.  Please contact Cheryl Bohlen (636-728-0707, ext. 234; with any question that you may have. Please visit and check the Ongoing Offerings section for homeschool specific links to many area attractions. And don’t forget to check out the top tabs too! Please feel free to forward this email to other homeschoolers and encourage them to join the email loop; sign up is at the top of the right column. Please make sure to include a link to the List website whenever forwarding or sharing even a small part of a post. Thank you.
If you know of an event, class, happening, or link you would like to see added, please contact me at zana8796 [at] yahoo [dot] com  and please let me know if you have any questions or find incorrect/out of date information.
Comments are not available, but sharing is.
The posted events are open to all homeschoolers in the St. Louis, MO, area (including St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Lincoln County, Franklin County, and Jefferson County in MO, and Madison County, Monroe County, and St. Clair County in IL, and surrounding regions).
NOTE: Inclusion in this list does not necessarily indicate endorsement by the blog owner. I try to include as many events or classes I know of in the Greater St. Louis area that would be of special interest to homeschoolers. Some of these events come from a distinctively “Christian” perspective, while others are purely “secular” in nature. If you see things that you would not be particularly interested in, just ignore them and look for the things that do appeal to you.
