Patriots’ baseball Spirit Night @ Chick-fil-A!!
We’ll be having a Spirit Night on Wednesday, March 11, from 5-8pm @ the Mid Rivers location.   All you have to do is tell them that you’re there for the Patriots’ Spirit Night when you order, and they’ll donate a portion of your total to the Patriots. It’s even good if you use the drive-thru, but then you’d miss out on chatting w/all the baseball players and their families! Come see us and support this great program!

The Compassion Experience
Reservations Required
Change the Story: The Compassion Experience is coming to St. Louis, MO with an event hosted at Faith Lutheran Church. The free event will bring visitors on an interactive journey through the lives of children living in Kenya and the Philippines.
Through over 2,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, visitors will step inside daily life in a developing country — visiting homes, markets and schools — without getting on a plane. Through the use of an iPod and headset, each tour is guided by a child whose story starts in poverty but ends in hope. The event is an excellent opportunity to experience another culture and better understand the realities of global poverty. Don’t miss this life-changing event brought to you by Compassion International and Faith Lutheran Church.

The nice folks at Barron Gymnastics have once again graciously opened their doors exclusively to homeschooling families for a once a month open gym, with a reduced rate for homeschoolers.

>All participating non-members must have a release form signed by their parent.

Confessions of a Prodigal Son
Homeschooler Nathan Clarkson has written and directed a movie about being a Prodigal Son. It is starring Kevin Sorbo (Hercules, God’s Not Dead) and also Nathan’s wife, Rachael Lee as well as St Louis native, Dawin Harris. I am working on getting a screening here in the St Louis area. Tickets must be pre-ordered and I have to sell about another 80 tickets to make the screening happen. This movie is not recommended for younger children due to some of the scenes showing alcohol and other teen-related events.
If you would please join me and others in supporting this and showing Hollywood we want more Value-based films. Also, please feel free to share the link via any social media you may be on. Share with friends and family that are in the area.

Ancient Skywatchers of the Eastern Woodlands
Sunday – March 22nd – 2:00pm
Dr.William Romain, PhD, chronicles a five-thousand year-old tradition of Native American skywatching. Using state-of-the-art LiDAR imagery and archaeoastronomic assessment protocols, he documents celestial alignments of representative sites from the Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian periods. He also explores certain design principles held in common across the region and significant trends through time.
This lecture is free, open to the public, and held at the Cahokia Mounds Interpretive Center.

The Write Stuff Contest
Enter your original literary work and you could win a prize!
Calling all kids and teens ages 8-18 with a talent for creative writing! The St. Louis County Library is holding a contest for all writers. There will be prizes for the winners.
How to enter:

  1. Send an email with your original literary work attached to kidzone@slcl.org or teenzone@slcl.org between March 1 and March 31, 2015.
  2. In the body of the email, please include the following: name of entrant, age, current SLCL Library card number, library branch, phone, email, parent/guardian name, school.
  3. Also include the following statement in your email: Yes, I have read the official contest rules and followed them. I agree that the attached document is my own work and contains my own original ideas.

The Write Stuff Contest Official Rules and Guidelines
-Students age 8-18 are encouraged to enter.
-Entrant must have a valid SLCL card.
-Limit one submission per person.
-Write one story, including the line: “I peeled back the paper and there you were…”
-Entry can be funny, serious, etc. Judging will be based on originality, story flow/continuity and mechanical elements (grammar, punctuation, spelling).
-Story must be between 250-500 words long for ages 8-14 and between 500-1000 words long for ages 15-18. (title does not count)
-Please send entry as a “.doc” or “.rtf” file.
-Each entry must be typed and double-spaced (no fancy fonts please).
-Do not write your name or place any other identifying marks on the story pages.
-Entries must be received between Sunday, March 1 and close of business on Tuesday, March 31, 2015.
-Winners will be chosen in three categories: Ages 8-10, Ages 11-14, and Ages 15-18.
-Winners will be notified by Friday, April 17 and posted at www.slcl.org within a week.
-First place entries will be posted in their entirety on the Kids Blog and Read Alert teen blog.
-Judges decisions are final.
-Visa gift cards will be given for 1st ($50) and 2nd ($25) place in each category. Winner and runner-up will receive certificates.

WETLANDS FOR KIDS
Saturday, April 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area in St. Charles
Wetlands for Kids Day is hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and Ducks Unlimited (DU). The event, supported by grants from the Enterprise Foundation, US Bank and the Mississippi Valley Duck Hunters Association, is free for both kids and adults.
Wetlands for Kids Day is designed to help families have fun discovering nature while also learning about the importance of these vital habitats in Missouri.
The activities include more than 20 stations where visitors can learn about wetland creatures first hand. There will be a chance to see real birds of prey courtesy of the World Bird Sanctuary. A live reptile and amphibian station will provide a close-up look at these wetland inhabitants. Kids can explore the Duck Wing Maze while learning to identify ducks by wings and plumage along the way. They can also crawl through a simulated beaver den.
Retriever demonstrations are popular with visitors who enjoy watching the dogs perform on land and water.   Other stations include fish tasting, air rifle shooting, archery, DU Laser Shot, and a rod and reel casting station.
Each child who attends gets a free subscription to the MDC Xplor: Adventures in Nature Magazine for kids. They will also receive a DU Greenwing membership and a subscription to Puddler Magazine. There will also be free tree seedling giveaways while supplies last.
In keeping with its watery theme, Wetlands for Kids Day will be held rain or shine. In the event of wet weather, the event will be moved indoors. Food will also be available for purchase during the event.

State Forest Nursery Open House
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites the public to discover nature through an open house on Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its 754-acre George O. White State Forest Nursery near Licking, MO. Reservations are requested by calling 573-674-3229.
MDC staff will provide guided tours on a small bus to show attendees how Nursery staff grow and sell more than 3 million seedlings annually. Visitors will learn how seeds from more than 60 species of trees and shrubs are collected, cleaned, planted, grown, lifted, graded, stored, and shipped. In addition to tours, staff will demonstrate the workings of a portable sawmill and answer conservation questions. Smokey Bear will also be at the event.
To get to the Nursery, take Highway 63 north from Licking a half mile to Shafer Road and then go west for four miles.
The State Forest Nursery has provided seedlings to Missourians since 1947 for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, and wildlife habitat. Learn more about the Nursery from the MDC website at mdc.mo.gov/node/3986.

Congressional Art Competition
I am pleased to announce that Missouri’s 2nd congressional district will participate in the Annual Congressional Art Competition again this spring. This competition is an excellent opportunity to recognize the rich artistic talents of the high school students in our district. Each year I look forward to seeing the outstanding work of our accomplished young artists. You can view the 2014 entries through a link on my website  www.wagner.house.gov .
The winning entry from the 2nd district will not only be recognized at the local level but will also be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol along with other student’s artwork from around the country.   The 2nd district winner   will   receive round-trip airfare to Washington, D.C.to attend a ceremony unveiling the winning   pieces from across the nation.   The second and third place entries will be displayed in my Washington D.C. and District offices, respectively, for one year.
All entries and release forms must be delivered to my District Office at 301 Sovereign Court Suite 201, St. Louis, MO 63011 by 5 PM on Monday, April 13, 2015. All the entries will be displayed and the winners announced at the 2nd District Exhibit and Awards Ceremony. Details regarding this event will be forth coming shortly. Please encourage your students to participate in this worthwhile program.

Pen Pal Program
HSAMF (Home School Association for Military Families) Pen Pal Program is for both military and civilian homeschooled children.
Our Pen Pal Program is a FREE literacy based, traditional letter writing program.  It is a great way to get children writing traditional letters, a skill that is often lost in today’s society, as well as make friends with children they would otherwise not have met.
Quite honestly, it has been a great way to work on grammar and spelling with my children, without them even realizing they are “working on school.”

We also want to encourage you to sign up for our e-newsletter.  Penpal Tidbits is a bimonthly publication that will give you fresh ideas to share with your penpal. For example, August 26th was Australia Day, so the children were encouraged to learn something new about Australia and then share it with their pen pal.

Each speaker will have about 10 minutes to speak so make sure you arrive on time. You won’t want to miss anything! We’ll also have tables set up for those who want more information from a particular speaker.
This should be really fun and informative.

Thinking About Homeschooling?
Mini-Conference 2014
The Thinking About Homeschooling Mini-Conference will be offered on April 5, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It is being organized by local home schooling families to provide information, encouragement and support to families who may have questions about home schooling.
The organizers want to demonstrate that home schooling allows an excellent, diverse and thorough education that can be individualized for each child’s specific abilities and needs.
The conference will begin with featured speakers David and Kara Brummel, and then continue with break-out sessions on a variety of topics, giving information about different aspects of home schooling. Attendees will be able to choose which speakers and topics they are most interested in. Additionally, there will be a curriculum fair that will allow interested parents to walk around and see a sampling of the different types of curricula that are available for home school use, as well as extra resource information detailing activities and opportunities available to homeschoolers in our community.
The curriculum fair will be open from 8:30am – 1:00pm. We would encourage you to choose to browse the fair and extra resource tables during one of the sessions instead of attending a speaker if you desire so that you will have ample time to take advantage of this valuable resource. It will not be available after lunch.

The Etiquette Factory curriculum is a fun and engaging Manners Camp program. The instructor, Mrs. Patterson, has a teaching degree in special education. She has homeschooled since 2005, and she has been active with the North County-based H.E.L.P.S. homeschool group. She and her family are active members of their church and are part of the Children’s Ministry there. She says, “If our children learn how to show others that they are valued through words and actions then it will help them out in every aspect of their lives. What better way to show God’s love for others than to start with a kind word or action?” I have 2 that are starting this week!

Horsemanship Clinic at Strong Tower Ranch
The Horsemanship Programs at STR are unique because they are, above all else, ministry! We want all who visit to be encouraged with the hope and love found in Jesus. Teachable moments of trust, relationship building, and leadership skills are built upon during the time spent with the horses. Our goal in the STR Horsemanship Program is to equip children, teens, and adults with valuable life lessons that can be carried over into every day experiences. We aspire to empower individuals with the confidence of who they are in Christ through our mentoring and discipleship programs.
Our program provides an opportunity for students ages ten and up to gain knowledge and experience with beginning through advanced horsemanship skills in a one-on-one setting. Instructors will incorporate biblical values and truths while teaching horsemanship skills. The clinic meets for five weeks.

NEW LEGO CLASS STARTS APRIL 10
The topic of this six -week session will be Forces of Nature. This is an all-new unit about the amazing and powerful forces of nature, as students explore the when, where, how, and why of all kinds of natural phenomenon. There is a lot of geography in this unit as we explore the “Ring of Fire,” “Tornado Alley,” and hurricanes around the world. We’ll also introduce students to basic icon-based programming using the LEGO WeDo drag-and-drop programming software. You won’t want to miss this session!
BRICKS 4 KIDZ Construction Craze Class Details:
>Class is for students in grades K– 5th. Sorry, this is not a pre-school level class and students must be kindergarten age to participate (six years old or a mature 5 year old).
>Class will run for six weeks on Thursdays from April 10 –May 15 at 2:30 – 3:30 pm (Please note the earlier class time).

Our club provides the opportunity for students ages 12-18 to gain skill in speaking and debate. We offer a group environment and instruction that allows students to participate with increasing confidence.
We currently meet on Tuesdays from 2:00-5:00pm at West County Assembly of God. Planning is currently underway for the 2014-2015 school year, but we do not anticipate major changes from this year. Congressional Art Competition
The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in the Missouri’s 2nd Congressional District. Please encourage your students to participate in this worthwhile program.
All entries will be judged by a panel of professional artists from the district who will award first, second and third places. All the entries will be displayed and the winners announced at the 2nd District Exhibit and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 26 at 9:30 a.m. at 301 Sovereign Court, St. Louis, MO 63011.
The winning piece from our district will be displayed for one year in the United States Capitol with the other winners from across the nation. The top artist will receive round-trip airfare for two to attend the Congressional Art Competition Reception in the nation’s capital. The second and third place entries will be displayed in my Washington D.C. and District offices, respectively, for one year.
All entries must have student release forms attached to the back and be delivered to my District Office at 301 Sovereign Court Suite 201, St. Louis, MO 63011 by 5:00 PM on Thursday, April 17, 2014.

Entry can be funny, serious, etc. Judging will be based on originality, story flow/continuity and mechanical elements (grammar, punctuation, spelling).
Story must be between 250-500 words long for ages 8-14 and between 500-1000 words long for ages 15-18. (title does not count)
Please send entry as a “.doc” or “.rtf” file.
Each entry must be typed and double-spaced (no fancy fonts please).
Do not write your name or place any other identifying marks on the story pages.
Entries must be received between Friday, March 1 and close of business on Sunday, March 31.
Winners will be chosen in three categories: Ages 8-10, Ages 11-14, and Ages 15-18.
Winners will be notified by Friday, April 19 and posted at http://www.slcl.org within a week.
First place entries will be posted in their entirety on the Kids Blog and Read Alert teen blog.
Judges decisions are final.

The MO Department of Natural Resources poster contest

In recognition and celebration of Drinking Water Week, May 5-11, 2013, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the American Water Works Association are holding a poster contest for Missouri students in the fifth grade.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners: $300 for first place, and $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Contest entries should be postmarked by *March 25, 2013*.
The artwork size must be no larger than 11×17 inches. Each entry should have the student’s name, the teacher’s name and the school name, address and telephone number on the back. Students should also be sure to sign the front of the artwork.
Entries will be judged on three criteria: how original the entry is, how well the concept is executed, and how well the poster relates to public water supplies.* *The poster should convey a message celebrating tap water!
A safe, reliable water supply is critical to the success of any community. It creates jobs, attracts industry and investment, and provides for the health and welfare of citizens in ways ranging from disease prevention to fire suppression. We often take water resources for granted unless we are living through a drought or when depleted water supplies threaten a community’s future. Water plays a vital role in our daily lives, and this year we are celebrating what only tap water can deliver.

2013 Congressional Art Competition
Competition Guidelines
Open to high school students only
Artwork must be two-dimensional, but may include any of the following medias:
-Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
-Drawings: pastels, colored pencils, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers, etc.
-Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
-Mixed Media
-Computer Generated Art
-Photography
Framing is optional for the district contest.  However, the winning piece MUST be framed before shipping to Washington, D.C. and must meet the framing requirements listed below:
-Each piece cannot weigh more than 15 lbs (including the frame)
-Each piece must be framed by the artist and be no larger than 28 inches high  x  28 inches wide  x  4 inches deep  (including the frame)
-“Snap on” frames are not allowed.  Metal Frames with Plexiglas are recommended.  No glass allowed.  Oil or acrylic on canvas may be framed without plexiglas covering.
-Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws.  Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo (other than the student’s own), painting, graphic, advertisement, or any other work produced by another person is a violation of the competition’s rules and will not be accepted.  Work entered must be in the original medium (not a scanned reproduction of the piece).
-The winner’s artwork will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for the entire year and cannot be returned to the students earlier.  Therefore, students should submit artwork they will not need for other purposes.
-Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission.  In accordance with this policy, pieces depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.
Deadlines
-Entry must be framed and delivered to the MO-2 district office by 5 PM on Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Washington DC Congressional Art Competition Reception
-Each congressional district picks a winning art piece to be hung in the U.S. Capitol for one year.  There will be a ceremony over the summer to unveil all of the winning artwork from across the country.  The date has yet to be determined.

In an effort to promote Christian integrity in the arts among young people, this award has been established to recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the arts while maintaining Biblical values and integrity.  Nominees for consideration should have the following qualifications:
1.  Must be age 25 or younger when they began their contribution to the arts
2.  Nominee’s contribution to the arts should display leadership, originality, involve or reach a significant number of people, and maintain integrity in content supporting Judeo/Christian values
